Cops: Drunk Driver Smashes Rental Into Tree

The following arrest information was supplied by the Morris Township Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

A drunk driver carrying drugs and a knife smashed a rental car into a tree early Saturday, according to Morris Township police.

At about 3:08 a.m., officers responded to Sussex Avenue near Bradford Court for a report of a crash, and found a blue 2008 Chevrolet Impala had crashed head-on into a tree, police said. The driver's airbag had deployed, but he was not wearing a seatbelt, police said. He had non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

The driver, Gary Smith Jr. of Randolph, was drunk, had an open container of beer, had a knife, and had a controlled dangerous substance in the car, police said. He was transported to Morristown Medical Center by the Morris Minute Men First Aid Squad for treatment, police said.

He was charged with driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, possession of a controlled dangerous substance, possession of a CDS with intent to distribute, possession of a CDS with possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon by a convicted person.

He remained in the care of the hospital Saturday, police said.
