Updated: Fuel Spill Causes Minor Delays, Powerful Odor

Sand used to dry up spilled gas on Madison Avenue.

No one was injured Wednesday when a tractor trailer had a fuel spill on Madison Avenue, just over the Morristown border in Morris Township.

The tractor trailer appeared to have been leaking for a while, as a strong gas smell and slick of spilled fluid was evident in several areas of town, including Franklin Street and near the I-287 off ramp on South Street. The bulk of the spill, however, occurred on Madison Avenue at Pitney Place shortly before 5 p.m., ironically near several gas stations.

Police from Morristown and Morris Township, and fire crews from Morristown, Morris Township and Whippany reported to the scene, as sand was spread out on the roadway to clean up the gas.

Traffic delays were minor as cones were placed on the road to divert traffic away from the truck.
