Gun Violence Solutions to Be Discussed at Library

Thursday meeting at the Morristown & Morris Township Library one of over 200 planned community meetings around the country.

As the president was moving forward with sweeping gun control proposals on Wednesday, grassroot efforts around the nation were preparing for their own conversations on gun violence.

Over 200 "Community Committee Against Gun Violence" meetings are scheduled throughout the country Thursday, including at 10 a.m. at the Morristown & Morris Township Library.

Not only are these events on the heels of President Obama's Wednesday announcement, which includes 23 executive actions to take effect immediately, it also is just days following a public event in Cranford, where many New Jersey mayors part of the Mayors Against Illegal Guns advocacy group convened.

"The tragedy in Newtown, Conn., was the last straw," reads the MoveOn.org information page for the nationwide event. "We've got to keep the call for change loud and visible to move our leaders from mere words to meaningful action. That will take consistent, creative, sustained action from us to end gun violence in our communities."

The Morristown meeting, organized by resident Pam Hasagawa and Morristown councilwoman Rebecca Feldman, is meant to introduce like-minded, concerned citizens to each other "to carry out peaceful, effective action and move our state and national representatives toward common sense solutions to reduce gun violence," Hasagawa said.

Unlike much of the nation's dialogue being tied perhaps a little too much in one political party or another, "I don't think the average Republican citizen cares less than the average Democrat citizen," she said.

Indeed, the Mayors Against Illegal Guns group, for example, is comprised of mayors from across the political spectrum. "This is something every person in America needs to care about,"Hasagawa said. "We don't know where it can happen again."

RVSP's are required to attend the meeting and can be made by contacting Pam Hasagawa at pamhasagawa@gmail.com, or by registering at this link.

NJ already has some of the strictest gun laws in the country. Obama is attempting to bring NJ gun restrictions to the rest of the country.

The suspect the meeting at the library will be packed with parents who let their kids watch violent movies and play violent video games.

It's not about the guns. It's about control. Disarming the nation is the first step toward UN takeover. Sharia law is making its way into the court system and jeopardizes the first amendment. Does anyone pay attention to what's really happening. The government uses tragedy to further their party agendas. They don't feel they have to answer to their constituents and do what is required. The government is supposed to PROTECT our rights, no take them away. Wake up people!

Honestly, Chris, it's hard to take comments like that seriously. The UN is the boogieman of every conspiracy nut. Next, you're going to bring up the old "Hitler took away the guns" myth, which is demonstrably untrue: http://www.law.uchicago.edu/files/files/harcourt_fordham.pdf

All this self-pitying paranoia is leading you to WHAT, Chris? Gonna form a militia, are ya? Seriously, seek help.

You nailed it on the self pity, Cletus. These guys LOVE to look like they are being victimized.

2nd Ammendment - "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

The ammendment is pretty clear. What part of shall not be infringed is not understandable? The creaters of the USA gave us the right to bear arms to overtake our government if it becomes tyrant - in which I believe it is with this facist in charge it is!

Doug, you have the right to free speech under the First Amendment, but as we all learned in grade school civics, that doesn't entitle you to shout "fire" in a crowded theater. In other words, justifiable restrictions on Constitutional rights are themselves Constitutional. Not sure why reasonable restrictions on gun ownership that don't infringe the right to bear arms are any different.

As far as your referring to President Obama as a fascist, that's the kind of nonsense I would expect on a Yahoo message board; I usually find the comments on this board make a bit more sense. Godwin's Law, anyone?

What part of "well regulated Militia" is not understandable, Doug? You forming one? You doing the regulating, or is Stu, the survivalist down the street giving the marching orders when you "overtake our government"?
It would behoove you understand your own proclamations before crying "fascism" every time your guy loses an election. Otherwise there's the danger you'll end up looking like a not-too-bright hysteric.
