John McGuinness officially takes over as head of the department.
McGuinness' family members, township officials, residents, as well as Morris Plains Mayor Frank Druetzler and Councilwoman Suzanne McCluskey attended the Sept. 19 ceremony.
Township officials, including Township Administrator Timothy Quinn, Deputy Mayor Bruce Sisler and Committeeman Scott Rosenbush all spoke about McGuinness before he was sworn in, praising his leadership ability and the type of person he is while also thanking him for his service.
McGuinness, who had been serving as the acting chief since May when former police chief Dennis Reilly retired, thanked his family, township officials and the community for their support.
A Morristown High School graduate, McGuinness has been with the department for more than three decades, starting out as a patrolman in 1981. He has since held numerous positions and received many awards and citations.
