World Trade Center Steel Raised in Morris Plains

9-11 Memorial taking shape.

The highly anticipated Morris Plains 9-11 Memorial, located at the intersection of Routes 53 and 202, took a giant step towards its Sept. 11 dedication date, as a piece of steel from the World Trade Center was put in place on Saturday afternoon.

Members of the police and fire departments were there, as well as the Morris Minutemen First Aid Squad and residents who gathered to watch the steel go up.

“This is a major milestone for us, getting this steel up,” said 9-11 Memorial Committee member Mike Bozza. “It’s been an unbelievable effort from the entire community. You see a lot of fire department guys here today, but it’s been the PBA, the Minutemen, our Rotary, the Town Council. It’s been an entire community effort to get this built.”

Back in May, where work has just begun. "If we have to work 24-7, we will have this done by September 9, 2011,” Bob Webster of the Morris Plains Volunteer Fire Department said at the time.

That’s just what they’ve done and, on Sunday, September 11, the 9-11 Memorial Committee will hold a formal dedication. In the days planned, including a dedication ceremony for Morris Plains students on Friday, and for the second year, an old-fashioned corn toss tournament fundraiser on Saturday.
