Harmonium Choral Society Holds Auditions for New Members

Harmonium Choral Society has a limited number of openings in all voice parts for experienced singers with good sight-reading ability. Auditions for the 2013-2014 concert season will be held by appointment only beginning Aug. 24 through Sept. 5, 2013, in Madison. Please email Dr. Anne Matlack, Artistic Director at director@harmonium.org to schedule an audition. Weekly rehearsals resume Sunday evening, September 8, at Grace Lutheran Church in Mendham.

Harmonium schedules three major concerts - held in December, March and June - as well as special appearances throughout the year. This year's December concert, "Alleluya, A New Work," includes world premieres by composers-in-residence Mark Miller and Martin Sedek. The concert also features works by 100th anniversary composers Britten and Verdi, a major Brahms motet, and much more. The chorus will be accompanied by Adrienne Blossey, oboe, and Joseph Arndt, on the fantastic E.M. Skinner organ at St. Peter's Church in Morristown. Multicultural works with percussion and a performance by the select Chamber Singers round out the December program.

Our March program, "The Song Within," will feature "Annelies," a major new cantata about Anne Frank by James Whitbourn, performed with violin, cello, piano, clarinet and enhanced by multimedia. The June concert, "Sing a New Song," is built around the Bach motet "Singet dem Herrn" and will highlight an eclectic selection of works about singing.

The spring will also include a collaboration with the New Jersey Festival Orchestra (formerly Westfield Symphony Orchestra and the New Philharmonic) in a performance of Mahler's Second Symphony "Resurrection."

Harmonium concert soloists are selected from the chorus's 100-voice membership, over one third of whom are professional musicians and/or music educators. Singers are also invited to audition for the Harmonium Chamber Singers, a 20-voice vocal ensemble selected from the chorus.
