Art in the Atrium Moves to Museum

20th anniversary exhibit will feature opening reception and lectures.

The annual Art in the Atrium event has outgrown the atrium and is moving into the .

Art in the Atrium is an African-American fine arts organization that showcases both established and emerging artists. The annual show is usually held in the atrium of the Morris County Administration and Records building, but this year will be at the museum on Normandy Heights Road from Thursday, Jan. 12 through Sunday, March 18.

This is the 20th anniversary of the exhibit, which is titled “Celebrating Our Legacy.” It showcases the work of Norman Lewis. Guest curator is Tarin Fuller.

The opening reception will be on Thursday, Jan. 12 from 6 to 9 p.m. and is organized by Rosalind Nzinga Nichol.

The speaker at the gala will be Janet Taylor Pickett.

Nichol, who holds a BFA and MA and is an adjunct professor at Bloomfield College, is also the lecturer in a series in conjunction with the exhibit on Feb. 4 and 25 and March 10, from 1 to 2 p.m. The series is titled “celebrating the origins of African-American Art and Craft Traditions. The lectures are $10 each and $20 for the series.

 The first session will be “Craft Traditions,” and will survey such African-American innovations and traditions as coiled baskets, shotgun houses, woven and appliquéd textiles, metal and wood works.

The second will be “Fine Arts and Artists” and will explore African-American artists from Joshua Johnson through Norman Lewis.

The third will be a panel discussion on collecting with art adviser and appraiser Helima Taha and artist representative, gallery owner and curator Tarin Fuller joining Nichol.
