Book reading and signing at Macculloch Hall Historical Museum

Book reading and signing at Macculloch Hall Historical Museum Sunday February 13th at 3pm

Eugene Onegin. A Novel in Verse- Henry M. (Harry) Hoyt

Macculloch Hall Historical Museum is pleased to host a presentation on Sunday February 13th at 3 pm by Henry M. (Harry) Hoyt. Please join us for a reading from and commentary by the translator on this new and bilingual translation of Russia’s best-loved classic, Eugene Onegin by Alexander Pushkin.  The story concerns a selfish hero who lives to regret his cold rejection of a young woman's love and his careless incitement of a fatal duel with his best friend.  The novel in verse was interpreted musically by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky; the opera was presented by the Metropolitan Opera during their 2007 season starring soprano Renee Fleming.  A book signing will follow Mr. Hoyt’s reading which is free with admission. Mr. Hoyt is generously donating the sale of the copies to benefit the museum. General admission applies; members free.

Prior to the reading visitors will have the opportunity to take a tour of the home and view the exhibit Hearth & Home: A Century of Family Life which explores 100 years of American life at home through the generations of the family who lived and worked here. The exhibit looks at everyday life—food preparation, housework, childrearing, and related activities— providing a through-the-keyhole perspective into circa 1810 -1910 Morristown, New Jersey. Visitors will learn about living a sustainable lifestyle on the Macculloch family farm, which once included 26 acres of pasture, orchards and cultivated farmland.  Assisted by several domestics and day laborers, the family once raised their own vegetables, fruit and meat for the table.  The exhibit also considers other themes rarely visited: the relationship of servant to master; keeping clean in an age before running water; and the limitations of seasonal food produced locally.  An interactive area provides opportunities for hands-on learning and experiential play and is fun for adults and children alike.

Macculloch Hall Historical Museum preserves the history of the Macculloch-Miller families, the Morris area community, and the legacy of its founder W.
