Macculloch Hall Historical Museum Hosts Old-Fashioned Family Garden Day

This Father’s Day spend an afternoon in the Macculloch Hall Historical Museum’s gardens and learn about children’s chores and family life in 1810. Was life at home different than it is today, or fairly similar?  Help do laundry the old-fashioned way, see how wool is spun into yarn, play with period toys, race Dad in an energetic game of hoops and sticks or play a fast paced game of graces.  Take a break from the games and learn about reducing, reusing and recycling then and now with the Morris County MUA. Everyone in the family can also enjoy the make and take crafts as well as exploring the gardens together on a scavenger hunt. Children are encouraged to dress in their favorite historic costume and participate in a costume parade at 2:30pm.

This program takes place in the museum’s 3-acre historic gardens, known for their heirloom roses and forgotten-in-time appeal.  All ages may enjoy the exhibit, Hearth and Home: A Century of Family Life, which includes a children’s interactive area, on view in the main gallery through July 1. Explore 100 years of American life at home through the generations of the family who lived, worked, played, and learned here.  Evocative quotes from the museum’s extensive archives together with historic objects and images provide a through-the-keyhole perspective into the lives of people who lived a sustainable lifestyle circa 1810 -1910 in Morristown, New Jersey. Tours of the period rooms of the museum will also take place throughout the afternoon, the last tour leaves at 3pm.  The garden, gift shop and exhibit galleries will remain open until 4pm.

General admission applies; members free.  Children must be accompanied by an adult.  Dads are admitted free.  Reservations are requested; please call 973 538 2404 ext 10.
