Police Standoff, Swimmer's Shot at Olympics, Top Morris News

A look at the top stories from Morris Township and Morris Plains from the past week.

One woman who was dog-sitting next door to the incident said the cops had her crawl on the grass when she was asked to leave her home. She said that the next day she still felt “traumatized” from the whole experience.

Nic Fink, 19, of Morristown, swam personal best times and accomplished all of his goals at the U.S. Swimming Olympic Trials in Omaha, Neb. last week. He made it to the semifinal round in the 100-meter breaststroke where he placed 11th behind two-time gold medalist Brendan Hansen. Although he didn’t qualify for the Olympic team, which only takes the top two swimmers in each event, he was thrilled to compete in one of the world’s fastest swim meets with some of the biggest names in swimming such as Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte.

The NJDOT held a public meeting at the Morris Township Municipal Building on Monday night to discuss the overpass replacement project at I-287 and James Street that will start in August. DOT representatives had two maps that showed the reconstruction plans and detours on James Street, and assisted resisdents in any questions or concerns they had about the project. James Street will be closed during the whole reconstruction period from August until May, and drivers traveling on that street will be directed to take detours on I-287.

Emily Kubin, 17, of Morris Township, recently reached her first goal for her charity, Emily’s Hat for Hope Initiative. Kubin collects and knits hats for the homeless and working poor, and surpassed her first goal of reaching 1,000 for the people of Appalachia in Kentucky. Her Facebook page has drawn national and international attention, and she continues to knit more hats for local soup kitchens and pantries.

Former Morristown High School principal Linday Murphy will be honored at the 20th-annual on Saturday, July 14, a community celebration that awards individuals with characteristics of the late George Gramby. Gramby was a substance abuse counselor in Morristown and Director of the substance abuse referral center “Beginnings.”
