Multiple Events Planned For September 11

From somber memorials to moving musical performances, choose what's right for you.

It may seem hard to believe, but this week, our country will reach the 10th anniversary of the tragic events that unfolded in New York, Washington D.C. and Pennsylvania on Sept. 11, 2001.

Given the occasion, there are going to be a lot of events this year. Here, we help you decide which you may want to attend:

  1. You Need To Know About the Morris County Remembrance Service: At 7 p.m. on Sept. 11, Morris County is planning a Remembrance Service and Candlelight Vigil at the Memorial on West Hanover Avenue in Parsippany. The observance will include the reading aloud of the names of Morris County victims and remarks from retired Secret Service Senior Special Agent Dennis Letts of Parsippany. Parking will be available at the Morris County Department of Human Services building at 340 West Hanover Ave. Shuttle buses will be available to transport those who need help to the Memorial.
  2. You Need To Know About The Dedication of the Morris Plains 9/11 Memorial: At 2 p.m. on Sept. 11, the new Morris Plains 9/11 Memorial will be officially dedicated. The memorial is located at the corner of routes 53 and 202.
  3. You Need to Know About Musica Morristown: Comprised of the New Philharmonic of New Jersey and Westfield Symphony Orchestra, the three-performance series will debut at 5 p.m. on Sept. 11 at The College of St. Elizabeth with a concert commemorating 9/11. It will include such performances as Barber's Adagio for Strings and Copland’s Fanfare for a Common Man, which was written to commemorate the sacrifice the American people made during World War II.
  4. You Need to Know About 9/11 at the Mayo Center: The Mayo Performing Arts Center and The Arts Council of the Morris Area are collaborating on a 9/11 remembrance ceremony that will be held at 7 p.m. on Sept. 11, starting at the Community Theatre, then moving next-door to the reflecting pool at Vail Mansion.
  5. You Need To Know About The Liquid Church Memorial: At 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. on Sept. 11, Liquid Church of Morristown will present "a message of inspiration and hope for the entire community" at the Morristown Hyatt.
  6. You Need to Know About the Americans for Liberty Event: On Sat., Sept. 10, from noon to 2:30 p.m., Americans for Liberty will hold their "Memorial on the Green," to honor victims and heroes of 9/11. Speakers include retired FDNY & EMS Commander Billy Gleason, retired Division Commander Jeff Endean, and 9/11 family member Rosa Perez-Leonetti. There will also be music by vocalist Barbara Eames. Rain or Shine.  
  7. You Need To Know About the Fire Siren: The fire siren in Morris Plains will blow six times on 9/11:
    - At 8:45 a.m., when American Airlines Flight 11 crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center. 
    - At 9:03 a.m., when United Airlines Flight 175 crashed into the South Tower of the World Trade Center. 
    - At 9:40 a.m., when American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon. 
    - At 9:50 a.m., when the south tower of the World Trade Center collapsed. 
    - At 10:00 a.m., when Flight 93 crashed in Shanksville, Pa. 
    - At 10:29 a.m., when the north tower of the World Trade Center collapsed.
  8. You Need To Know About Programs At CCM: The County College of Morris will hold several special events that are free and open to the public. 
    - Portions of the Reflection Wall, consisting of pictures, poems and other artwork created by the college community following 9/11 will be on display in the Student Community Center (SCC) lobby from September 6–12. 
    - The 9/11 Quilt created on the first anniversary of September 11 also will be on display in the Student Community Center (SCC) lobby from September 6–12. The 9/11 Quilt was a project initiated by CCM staff.
    - Two films will be shown on Wed., Sept. 7, and Mon., Sept. 12, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the SCC Davidson Room: "9/11 – The Filmmakers Commemorative Edition," a CBS documentary that aired in March 2002, and "102 Minutes that Changed America."
    - CCM President Dr. Edward J. Yaw will host a closing ceremony on Mon., Sep. 12, beginning at 12:30 p.m. outside the SCC, with performances by the Division of Liberal Arts. If it rains, the ceremony will be held indoors.
