New Charges for Accused Bully, Dad Calls Cops, Son Arrested Top Local News

A look at the top stories from Morris Township and Morris Plains from the past week.

Michael Conway, 19, one of the accused teens of bullying Lennon Baldwin before he committed suicide, was charged with possession of a weapon, drug paraphernalia over the weekend, and now his Pre-Trial Intervention will be postponed.

A Morris Township man was arrested on drug charges after getting into an accident on Monday morning where he damaged a parked car, mailbox and lawn. Jason Friedberg, 28, told the officers he didn't remember the accident after he allegedly drove home drunk. Friedberg's father first called the cops because he noticed the car was vandalized, but the cops realized it was Friedberg's accident that caused the damage.

Matt Karr and John Gill, both 17 of Morris Plains, are the latest teens to join the Morris Plains Fire Department. Karr, the son of councilman Jason Karr, joined just a few months after his younger brother Nicholas Karr, 15, joined. Both Karr and Gill said they were inspired to join from their families' volunteer efforts.

Thousands attended the annual National Night Out event at Mennen on Tuesday, where participants got to learn about safety practices from local municipal, county and state law enforcement agencies through interactive demonstrations and games.

Actor Hugh Laurie from the famed TV show House will be at the Mayo Performing Arts Center on Sept. 12 where he perform play Jazz and Blues songs with The Copper Bottom band.

Two burglarly incidents occured on Sunday night at the Giny and Stardust pools in Morris Township. Up to $1,000 worth of cash and over $90 worth of candy were taken from the snack bars. Police are still investigting the incidents and it is not yet determinned if they were done by the same burglar.

The township began its road resurfacing project on Aug. 2, and is on its way to repaving and milling a dozen roads by mid-August. Each road is expected to take 2-3 to complete.
