New Mansion Is in Good Company

Sixteenth Mansion in May is Glynellyn

Glynallyn on Canfield Avenue in Morris Township is the 16th Mansion in May sponsored by the Women’s Association of Morris Medical Center.

The 42-room castle joins a roster of the most spectacular homes in Morris and Somerset counties that were for one reason or another available for the decorator showcase that has been presented somewhat irregularly since 1974.

The first MIM was for some a last glimpse of Upton Pines, a stone house that was part of the Mountain Colony of Bernardsville until destroyed by fire in 1982.

Another Mountain Colony house was the 2003 MIM. The Cross Estate, another stone house which is now part of the Morristown National Historic Park.

All of the houses are turned over the decorators to exercise their imaginations in each room.

Glynallyn bears the imprints of George Marshall Allen’s imagination even while empty. Stained and painted glass windows depict kings and queens, unicorns and other mythical animals. Gargoyles hang over the turrets watching visitors go by. There was once a moat – no alligators – but that no longer exists.

Mansion In May at Glynallyn will be open for the entire month of May and is also available for private tours and private events. Advanced tickets are $25 and will be available online in mid February, and at select retail locations in March.  Tickets at the door will be $30.  To learn more visit www.MansionInMay.org.
