Normandy Park Scouts Spruce Up Donated Chicken Coop

Stop by and check out the chicken coop at Urban Farm

After a cold winter, the chickens come home to roost again at Urban Farm at Lafayette, but now they can do it in style.

The previous chicken coop, which is still there, is a renovated rabbit hutch. Through the money raised from cookie sales, Morristown Girl Scout Troop 813 donated a new chicken coop to the farm and stopped by last Friday to give it a facelift.

They spent the sunny afternoon painting and decorating the coop to welcome the chickens home. About 15 girl scouts make up the troop, all of whom are Normandy Park fifth graders.

Urban Farm is Grow it Green Morristown’s newest venture and is an agricultural teaching garden. Working on land owned by the Morris School District, the garden showcases the transformation of an underutilized former school yard, into a living classroom for the estimated 4,700 children of the Morris School District, as well as the local community.  Additionally, the produce from the garden is donated to the District and to area food banks. This summer, they will double in size.
