Solar Panels to Cover Parking Lot

Planning Board approves variances for KDC

KDC Solar ASGM, LLC will install solar panels on the roof and parking lot of its building on Southgate Parkway.

The Morris Township Planning Board approved KDC’s application for variances and a site plan to install panels as canopies on an existing parking lot. Because of the supports of the panels, seven parking spaces will be removed. KDC received variances for the lower number of parking spaces and for setbacks from the property lines.

The state’s Municipal Land Use Law holds solar panels are inherently beneficial, making it easier to obtain a variance for them.

Southgate Parkway is an internal feeder road off South Street, so board members said they were less concerned about the setbacks than they would be on a different street.

Mayor H. Scott Rosenbush said KDC’s new lighting will improve the safety of the parking lot. He called that a “nice extra” to the development.
