I-287 Overpass Discussion, Swimmer's Olympic Try

Here's a look at what's happening this week and what you can expect to see on Patch.

On Monday night, the New Jersey DOT will hold a public meeting to discuss the upcoming overpass replacement at I-287 and James Street. Anyone is invited to attend the meeting that will be held at 6 p.m. at the Morris Township Municipal Building.

Local Swimmer Finishes Strong at Olympic Trials

Nic Fink, 19, of Morristown swam his personal best times at the Olympic trials last week in Omaha, Neb. He finished 11th in the 100-meter breastroke in the semifinals, only three spots below those qualified for finals. He also competed in the 200-meter breaststroke and 200-meter IM. Although he didn't qualify for the Olympic team, which only takes the top two swimmers in each event, he said the experience was amazing and he is hopping back in the pool this week to train for the U.S. Open Swim Meet in August.

Morristown Student Surpasses Goal for Charity

Emily Kubin, 17, of Morris Township, recently reached her goal of collecting and knitting 1,000 hats for the people of Appalachia in Kentucky. Kubin's program she created, Hats for Hope, donates hats and other winter items to those in need. She had planned to reach her goal by December, but she finished six months early. Kubin started off knitting the hats on her own and donating to local pantries and churches, but her initiative has drawn national attention and has been receiving donations from 22 states and two foreign countries.

Sustain the Plains Day at Morris Plains Farmers Market

On Saturday, the Morris Plains Farmers Market will host the Sustain the Plains Day. The event will be presented by Councilwoman Laurie Fu who will go over ways to help make the borough a "green" community.

Freeholder Director to Meet With Township and Borough Mayors

Freeholder Director Bill Chegwidden plans to meet this week with township mayor Peter Mancuso and borough mayor Frank Dreutzler about the expansion of the East Hanover Avenue Traffic Study. The township committee to ask the freeholders to expand the study that is evaluating traffic in the area.
