Morris Township Lowers Electric Bill

New deal will save approximately $165,000 annually.

With the cost of electricity projected to rise in 2014, Morris Township Administrator Timothy Quinn was looking for a way to lessen the impact on the municipality when their current energy deal expired in June.

What he didn't expect, was to increase the savings.

"We hit a home run today," Quinn said at Wednesday's Township Committee meeting.

The home run Quinn was referring to is a new energy deal which will save Morris Township $165,000 annually based on what they were paying back in 2010.

"In 2010 we started bidding out. We were at a rate of. 11 cents a kilowatt and we were able to reduce it to .97. We brought it down to .082 and looking at the energy prices and the forecast of rates rising we thought is prudent to lock in that rate," Quinn said.

But Quinn was able to do more than lock in the rate, he was able to reduce it.

"We actually came in at .08 cents," Quinn said. "And compared to what we were paying back in 2010 it saves us $165,000 a year."

The change takes effect in July when the new supplier Eastern Energy takes over for Direct Energy. Eastern Energy is partnered with HGACBuy, a nationwide, government procurement service.  Working as a part of the local government entities, HGACBuy helps make the governmental procurement process more efficient. Contracts are awarded based upon a public competitive procurement process. All contractors are compliant with governmental regulations.
