Morristown Student Joins Morris Plains Fire Department

Service in the fire department the first stop on the teen's road to becoming a Navy Seal.

While many of Gavin Angulo’s peers are busy playing Halo while deciding between Playstation 4 and X-Box One for Christmas, the 14-year-old Assumption School student went to last Thursday’s meeting of the borough council to gain permission to join the auxiliary fire department.

“Thank you for volunteering so many things get done in our community  because people volunteer,” Morris Plains Mayor Frank Druetzler said.

Angulo’s desire to join Morris Plains Bravest came from after experiencing firehouse life first hand, on a trip across the country.

“I went to visit my aunt in California and she won a church raffle that included a tour of the firehouse,” Angulo said. “I got to spend the night there with them and ever since then I’ve wanted to be a fireman.”

Angulo said at the Escondido Firehouse he saw firsthand how passionate the firemen were about their work and about the camaraderie they shared, which fits in perfectly with the plan the teen has for the future.

“I want to attend the Annapolis Naval Academy,” Angulo said. “And ultimately I want to become a Navy Seal.”

For now, the eighth grader is going to get a taste for helping others on the local level, and the borough council unanimously supported his application.

“You are joining a great group of firemen,” Druetzler said. “You are already a good person, and they are only going to reinforce that.”
