Veterans Honored at Morris Plains Borough School

Flag raising, guest speakers and assembly honored those who served.

The Morris Plains Borough School paused on Monday to honor all who serve with their annual Veteran's Day celebration. Each year the school invites veterans from VFW Post 3401 Morris Plains to their school on Veterans Day for a ceremony and according to Sr. Vice Commander Jim Auriemma, they are happy to attend.

"The students pay tribute to the Veterans with speeches, videos, and song," Auriemma said. "We thank you all at the school for this recognition each year."

The Flag Raising ceremony began in the Jack O'Donnell Garden, where the day's special guest veterans, including Ed Quinn who served in the U.S. Navy during WW II, were welcomed by students, faculty and administration.

Borough School student Charlotte MacMurray began with the singing of the National Anthem, which was followed by fellow eighth grader Nile Birch's performance of Taps on trumpet.

Aurienma took the honors in raising the flag and the group quickly assembled in the school auditorium for the second part of the day's event. Student Council President Fiona Palumbo led the school in the Pledge of Allegiance, and the assembly continued with several student presentations and poems from grades three, four and five.

Nile Birch also presented his Patriot's Pen Essay entry. Other highlights included a video presentation of the history of the VFW, The Armed Forces Gratitude Campaign video, and the Third Graders A-Z Book Presentation.

"Anna Skelton, Julianna Belles and Alexandra Dovano all provided wonderful vocal performances during the assembly, under the direction of Mr. Richard Hilton," said Borough School Principal Sean Dolan. "The assembly was outstanding and special thanks go out to both Mrs. Ginny Hussy and Mrs. Jessica Hendershot for their efforts in planning and organizing the event! It was a great way to begin the week and a great honor to our beloved veterans!"
