Armed Kidnappers Robbed, Stuffed Woman in Trunk, Prosecutor Says

New Hampshire resident, 71, kidnapped and robbed at gunpoint in Route 10 parking lot.

Two East Rutherford residents have been accused of carjacking and kidnapping a 71-year-old woman at gunpoint from a Parsippany parking lot before stuffing her in the trunk of her car, the Morris County Prosecutor's Office said.

Joseph Defreitas, 41, and Marilyn Nadeau, 52, were charged Thursday with kidnapping, robbery, carjacking, conspiracy and credit card theft. Defreitas was also charged with possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

According to a statement released Friday by Acting Morris County Prosecutor Fredric Knapp, a 71-year-old New Hampshire woman traveling home from a holiday visit with family in Mount Laurel became lost and stopped in a Route 10 parking lot on Dec. 29. The prosecutor's office did not indicate where on Route 10 the incident took place.

While attempting to get directions, the woman was approached by Defreitas and Nadeau, Knapp said. Defreitas brandished a handgun and forced the woman into his car, Knapp said. Nadeau followed in the victim's car to an ATM machine in Parsippany, Knapp said.

Defreitas demanded the woman reveal her personal identification number to complete the cash withdrawal, Knapp said. The woman complied and was then driven to a parking lot outside a Parsippany industrial building on Woodhollow Road, Knapp said.

Defreitas then stuffed the woman in the trunk of her car, Knapp said. The woman was later able to free herself and call for help, Knapp said.

After stealing the woman's purse, Defreitas and Nadeau used her credit cards at stores throughout North Jersey and New York, Knapp said.

Members of the Parsippany Police Department and Morris County Prosecutor's Office arrested Defreitas and Nadeau in East Rutherford on Thursday, Knapp said.

Bail was set at $500,000 for Defreitas and $300,000 for Nadeau, both without a 10 percent cash option, Knapp said. The pair was remanded to the Morris County Correctional Facility in lieu of bail.

look at the old man picking fights with a 21 year old. like i said... your a seriously sad invividual. theres nothing you could say or do to anger me in any way. Criminality i have in mind? I am pretty sure putting you in your place is far from criminal. Why dont you post your name and where your from? someones a little scared :) Just another internet tough guy. hahahahaha, oh and by the way im a college student pursuing a lucrative degree, if you want to go down personal roads, we can go down them. Granted you'll never put any information on here that would allow people to find out who you really are, because you must be so ashamed. :) Oh and i never said you didnt have the right to do or say or opinionize in whichever way you please, just simply stating that its pathetic. I hope your response makes you feel really good about yourself as im sure it does, and that in itself is again beyond pathetic... have a good day!!

Steph (I'll keep it gender-neutral), Good luck in college. Hit those library resources, your grammar needs some tweaking. Other than that, I hope you don't wind up at the next OWS. Remember, the future looks very, very bleak for college graduates. Shame us old guys left such a mess for you. But alas, the 80's were very good to me, with all our borrowing and defaulting. Life is still good, and thanks for picking up my tab. Good day, friend.

Looks like you ran out of anything concrete to say,(not that you had in the first place). I also have a great job lined up for me when i graduate. I'm not worried about my future, it's looking pretty good. I've got great credit, a beautiful girlfriend of 6 years, and get straight A's. I'm not exactly sure what tab of yours i personally am picking up... your mindless banter is boring me, im sure you'll respond to this again but i most certainly won't be considering i have much more important things to be doing than sitting on a computer whining at people all day :) Have a great existence buddy ol' pal!
