Car Caught in Flood Water. Don't Be Next

Friday's rain wreaked havoc on some Morris Township roads.

Heavy rain on Friday evening caused some local streets to flood. In one case, according to the Morris Township Police Department, a car became trapped in the water that amassed near the intersection of James Street and New Harter Road. A tow truck had to pull the car from the flooded area, police said.

On Sunday, residents may need to prepare for a similar scenario as a “hazardous weather outlook” has issued for the area by the National Weather Service. Strong to severe thunderstorms are possible, producing heavy rainfall Sunday afternoon and evening, “which could lead to localized flooding,” according to the report.

With that alert in mind, here are some tips from FEMA on what to do when you encounter flooding while driving.

  • Six inches of water will reach the bottom of most passenger cars causing loss of control and possible stalling.
  •  A foot of water will float many vehicles.
  • Two feet of rushing water can carry away most vehicles including sport utility vehicles (SUV’s) and pick-ups.
  • Do not drive into flooded areas. If floodwaters rise around your car, abandon the car and move to higher ground if you can do so safely. You and the vehicle can be quickly swept away.
  • Do not walk through moving water. Six inches of moving water can make you fall. If you have to walk in water, walk where the water is not moving. Use a stick to check the firmness of the ground in front of you.

Keeps this information in mind to stay safe on Sunday, or any day when flooding is possible.
