Cops: Drunk Summit Man Resists Arrest
Incident occurred on Saturday night on East Hanover Avenue following motor vehicle stop.
An allegedly drunk Summit man resisted arrest after he was caught speeding on East Hanover Avenue Saturday night, according to a statement released Wednesday by the
Joseph F. Stefans, 58, was charged with DWI, reckless driving, refusal to submit a breath sample, speeding, third-degree resisting arrest, obstruction and disordly conduct.
Stefans was pulled over by Officer Chris Tongring Saturday night just after 11:30 p.m., police said. Stefans was allegedly traveling 50 miles per hour in a 30-miles-per-hour zone, according to Capt. Rich Ferrone, of the Morris Township Police.

Tongring determinned Stefans was driving while intoxicated, and when he first tried to handcuff Stefans, he resisted, police said. With the help of another officer, Stefans was secured and taken to police headquarters, according to the police.
Police said that Stefans and Tongring suffered minor injuries from the incident, but neither of them required or requested for medical attention at the time.

According to the police, Stefans refused to provide a breath sample at the police station.
Police said Stefans was released after completing processing, and has a future court date at the Municipal Court.
