Fair Warning: Holiday Crackdown on Drunk Driving

Morris Township Police joined statewide effort to stop DWI incidents..

According to Capt. Dennis Reilly, the Morris Township Police have joined a statewide effort to crack down on impaired driving. The program, called, "Over the Limit, Under Arrest," runs through January 2, 2011.

The focus for law enforcement agencies statewide will be on detecting and arresting intoxicated drivers. DWI patrols and sobriety check points will be employed, using grant money provided by the N.J. Division of Highway Traffic Safety.

According to information provided by police, 185 people were killed last year in New Jersey as a result of alcohol-related crashes, 31% of the total traffic fatalities reported.

According to Reilly, the Morris Township Police Department encourages the public to be responsible by not combining drinking and driving. He also recommended that those who plan on drinking should either use mass transit or get a designated driver before going out for the evening. Wearing seat belts helps protect against those who do not follow these rules.

To report a drunk driver, call #77 on your cell phone. For more information on "Over the Limit, Under Arrest," or other traffic safety matters, call the Morris Township Traffic Safety Unit at (973) 539-0777.
