Police: 'Don't Touch Wires'

Risk of electrocution concerns officials.

Morris Township Police Chief Dennis Reilly said he is very concerned by the events of Monday morning, which included residents moving downed wires so they could drive out of their streets. Some people also are circumventing police barricades on blocked roadways.

"Do not touch downed wires," he said. "Even if that wire seems dead, there could be power a quarter mile down the road and if you pick the wire up, it's all over."

If your street is blocked by a tree, don't think that police are just ignoring it, Reilly said. "If you see trees down and they're touching wires, we have to wait for the power company to come and deal with the wires before we can do anything with the tree."
