NY Jets Running Back Indicted on Weapons Charges

Mike Goodson was arrested in May and is sidelined for the remainder of 2013 with a torn MCL and ACL.

New York Jets running back Michael Goodson Jr. was indicted Thursday for allegedly possessing firearms and illegal ammunition during a May traffic stop in Morris County.

Goodson was the passenger in a GMC Yukon driven by Garant Evans, 32, of Roselle, when police saw the duo stopped in the center lane of Interstate 80 West in Denville at 3:15 a.m. on May 17, the Morris County Prosecutor's Office said.

When a tow truck driver came upon the vehicle, he was concerned about the intoxicated condition in which he found Goodson and Evans, the prosecutor's office said.

Goodson was transported to Saint Clare’s Hospital and eventually charged with possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, unlawful possession of a handgun, possession of a handgun, and possession of a hollow-point bullet.

An investigation revealed a loaded Taurus .45 caliber handgun was in the glove box with a hollow-point bullet loaded in the gun, the prosecutor's office said.

Both men were indicted on charges of second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon and fourth-degree prohibited weapons and devices. Evans was also indicted on charges of second-degree certain persons not to have weapons.

Evans was convicted in June 2003 of possession of drugs with intent to distribute within 1,000 feet of a school, according an arrest affidavit.

Goodson, 26, still a resident of Spring, Texas, according to court documents, is a native of Irvington. He tore his MCL and ACL in the Jets' game against the Pittsburgh Steelers last month, sidelining him for the remainder of the season.

The injury came just two weeks after Goodson had finished serving a four-game suspension for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy.
