Police: Driver Killed in Crash With Deer Near Delbarton

Mendham Road was blocked from Washington Valley Road to Whitehead Road in Morris Township

A driver was killed in a collision with a deer near an entrance to the in Morris Township Saturday evening, police determined after a preliminary investigation of the incident.

Capt. Dennis Reilly of the Morris Township Police Department said the accident took place at about 5:01 p.m. on Mendham Road. The driver was traveling east in the area of Delbarton when the collision with the deer occurred, he said. The vehicle then left the roadway, where it traveled a distance before coming to rest in a wooded area just east of Delbarton's east entrance, he said.

The driver, whose name is being withheld by authorities pending notification to family, was pronounced dead at the scene, Reilly said.

Mendham Road was closed to traffic between Washington Valley Road and Whitehead Road during the scene investigation but was re-opened at approximately 8:20 p.m.

Emergency services from Morris Township responded to the scene, along with paramedics from Atlantic Health.  The Morris Township Traffic Safety Unit was assisted on scene by the Morris County Sheriff's Department, Morris County Prosecutor's Office and Morris County Park Police. 

The investigation is continuing.
