HVAC Fire Causes Courthouse Closure

Roads have now been reopened.

An overheated HVAC motor caught fire in the attic of the Morris County Courhouse Tuesday morning, causing an evacuation and closure of over an hour, according to David Barter, Morris County's assistant fire marshall.

The latest fire occurred in the historic section of the courthouse, causing an evacuation at about 9:45 a.m. The Morristown Police Department reported "fire department activity at the Morris County Court House," according to an alert issued just after 10 a.m. via the Nixle.com alert service. The building reopened at 11 a.m.

Ann Street between Schuyler and Western was closed for a time, as was a section of Western Avenue. These streets have been reopened.

According to Barter, the HVAC unit should be replaced by the end of the day, leaving only a residual smell. By tomorrow, he said, "You probably won't know it happened."
