Teens to Train as Cops, Firefighters, EMTs at Morris County Public Safety Academy

Cadets will gain real-world experience in free, week-long program.

Morris County teenagers with an interest in public safety will have the opportunity to learn what life is really like for a police officer, firefighter or EMT this summer through a free program sponsored by the Morris County Board of Chosen Freeholders.

The Youth Public Safety Academy will be hosted from Aug. 5 through Aug. 9 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day at the Morris County Public Safety Training Academy, 500 West Hanover Ave., in Parsippany. The program is open to high school students in grades 10-12 and a graduation ceremony will be held at the completion of the week on Aug. 9.

The purpose of the academy is to introduce the students to careers in public service, public safety and emergency services, as well as county government. Students will take field trips and participate in hands-on demonstrations, as well as hear presentations from the Morris County Bomb Squad, SWAT and SERT Teams. They will also learn about crime scene investigation and complete physical training.

“We will be placing strong emphasis on self-respect, respect of others, teamwork and commitment to one’s goals,” William Schievella, the academy's coordinator, said.  “The academy is perfect for any high school student who would like a challenge this summer.”

The Morris County Board of Chosen Freeholders is sponsoring the academy in hopes the summer program will build interest in public safety professions.

“Maybe, one day, because of the experience gained at the academy, one of these students will run for public office or pursue a career in law enforcement or volunteer as a firefighter or EMT,” said Douglas Cabana, freeholder liaison to the Department of Law and Public Safety.  “But, even if they don’t, the leadership lessons they will learn during the week at the academy will last them a lifetime.”
