Volunteer Firefighters Helped Prevent Suicide

All fire companies recognized for efforts during Irene.

Last month, two Morris Township firefighters received Lifesaving Awards at the a township committee meeting. 

Volunteer members Jim Correale and Patrick Daley from the Fairchild Fire Company were recognized Oct. 19 for their efforts during Hurricane Irene, which resulted in preventing a suicide.

The men took action when they spotted someone about to jump off the Lake Avenue Bridge over the then-roaring Whippany River, officials said. They grabbed and restrained the person until help arrive.

David Mayer, the first to spot the jumper was recognized, along with other firefighters who were at the scene.

All five fire houses in Morris Township were recognized for their efforts during the storm.
