Morris Plains 'Getting Back to Normal'

Police Chief says borough fared well overall in Hurricane Irene

Morris Plains Police Chief Scott Thompson said that, overall, the borough came through Hurricane Irene in good shape. "We fared pretty well. I'm very happy ... Some towns are still under water."

Thompson said that all previously flooded roads have been reopened. "There are one or two places where downed wires remain, but they're barricaded. We have to wait for the power company on those."

Although the JCP&L outage map indicates that over 1,300 customers in Morris Plains are without power, Thompson said he believes the correct number is closer to 40. The rest are most likely in the Fairchild area of Morris Township, which has a Morris Plains zip code.

The homes on Valley Stream Circle that were flooded yesterday have been examined by the building inspector, Thompson said. They have been deemed structurally sound and are expected to be habitable again after the water recedes.

"All in all, things are getting back to normal," Thompson said.
