Morris Plains Has Plans for Grant

Borough is starting a the Sustain the Plains Team

Councilwoman Laurie Fu held up a photo of herself accepting a $1000 Sustainable Jersey grant.

It was part of her report to her fellow council members about the new Morris Plains Sustainable Jersey Green Team, newly named the Sustain the Plains Team.

The $1,000 grant, awarded at the state League of Municipalities convention in Atlantic City in November will be used to assist the borough schools in their recycling efforts and for signage at the recycling center.

“It’s a building grant,” Fu explained, designed to assist the borough in its early efforts to receive state certification as a sustainable community.

Fu said the Sustain the Plains team will discuss with teachers and other school staff how to best teach the students about sustainability. They have other items on the Sustainable Jersey checklist they will tackle and Fu said she believes the borough will have enough points on the list to achieve Sustainable status by August 2012.
