Morris Plains Marks Barbershop Harmony Week

The council announced that April 7-11 will be Barbershop Harmony Week in Morris Plains

At the Morris Plains Borough Council meeting last Thursday, Mayor Frank Druetzler proclaimed April 7-11 Barbershop Harmony Week in Morris Plains. A barbershop quartet from the Morris Music Men barbershop chorus was present to accept the proclamation and to share a song or two, said Terry Scullin, President of the Morris Music Men.

The Barbershop Harmony Society is celebrating its 75th birthday. It was born in April of 1938 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Back then it was called the Society For the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America (SPEBSQSA). From a beginning gathering of 26 men who shared a love for this uniquely American style of 4-part harmony, it has grown to become the world’s largest all-male singing organization with nearly 28,000 members.

The Morris Music Men chorus includes men of all ages from Morris Plains and across North Jersey. They meet at 7:15 p.m. each Tuesday at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 300 Shunpike Rd., Chatham, to sing and socialize.

New singers are always welcome. If you’ve ever sung in a play, choir or chorus, or just warble in the shower, you and barbershopping could be made for each other.

More information about the chorus, its quartets and their musical programs is available by calling 877-808-8697 or visiting the chapter’s website at www.MorrisMusicMen.org.
