Storm Recovery Making Progress in Morris Twp.

Still, thousands without power

Mid-day Monday, Morris Township Police sent out this message via the Nixle community alert system "Crews are currently workng on W. Hanover Av. Keep your fingers crossed it's open tomorrow."

And some progress has been made on dealing with the road closure, one of the most significant in Morris Township following this weekend's freak snowstorm, which downed wires and trees all over northern New Jersey.

The police department said late Monday night that while the road is still closed between Junard and North Start Drive, JCP&L "has removed primaries from the road." The township was waiting on Verizon to remove fiber optic cables.

Sussex Avenue, another high priority for the township, remained closed between Raynor Road and Gaston Road. Police said a tree had been removed, but several branches remained. Light had been restored, however.

More than 6,600 people remained without power in Morristown and the other communities covered by its zip code Tuesday morning, according to JCP&L. Another 2,300 people were without power in the areas covered by the Morris Plains zip code.

Monday,  Capt. Rich Ferrone of the Morris Township Police Department said West Hanover and Sussex avenues were key for the township—both because clearning them would provide JCP&L more access, and because they serve as major avenues for traffic.

"Right now, there is no east-west corridor into Morris Township with those two roads being closed," he said at the time.
