5 Tidbits from the Morris Plains School Board

The Morris Plains Board of Education had a busy meeting on Thursday, Oct. 27

1. The sign is coming: The lighted sign at should be installed before Thanksgiving, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Ernest Palestis promised.

2. Special education costs are higher than expected: Palestis kept a promise to the board to give it updates on expenses incurred by the district that were not anticipated in the year's budget. He reported on $187,734 in unbudgeted special education expenses since the budget was struck in April. Most of these expenses were out of the district's control.

3. Citizens are wanted to help with the strategic plan: The board of education is seeking residents to help develop a strategic plan for the district. Besides parents and teachers, alumni of the district's schools are going to be asked to serve.

4. A committee will seek a new superintendent: Board president Lee Connor will form a committee to search for a new superintendent of schools. Palestis' contract as an interim is for one year with an option to renew for one year.

5. The educational foundation will focus on corporations: Suzanne Scafer Skalski, secretary and board of education liaison of the Education Foundation of Morris Plains, said the foundation is developing a strategy to solicit grants and donations from corporations.
