It's U of VA Charlottesville for Shotput Star Vena

MHS athlete makes college choice official.

Humble. Get used to the word, it's going to show up a lot in this article.

That word was used multiple times to describe athletic Morristown High School superstar Nick Vena on Tuesday, Feb. 8, during the senior's event signing his intent to attend the University of Virginia at Charlottesville this fall. Both Vic and Michelle, Nick's parents, said it separately, as well as Paul Buccino, the Track and Field coach at MHS.

"It's always about revel in the moment if there is a moment, then back to work," said Vic Vena. "He's a pretty humble, grounded kid."

But, that would not be the 6-foot-4, 275 pounder's style.

"When people talk about him, it's not just for his athletic accomplishments," said Michelle Vena. "He's a role model, a leader, a friend. That's Nick as a person."

Buccino, who has coached Nick throughout his high school career, had about as much to say about the athlete. "I think Nick is a credit to himself," he said. "Athletes like him come around once in a lifetime, if you're lucky. What sets him apart is, he's not only gifted and talented, but also a gentleman."

Despite all the attention and praise, Nick remained, yes, humble.

"I feel like words don't do much," he said at the signing. "Actions speak for themselves."

Nick Vena thanked all of the positive influences in his life, including his mother, father and grandmother, Josie Modoski, who also was in attendance. Nick plans to continue his record-breaking shot put career at UVA, and hopes to eventually become a physical education teacher.

"To us, he's still just Nick," Michelle Vena said. "He's our son, and we're proud of him."
