Morris Plains Now a Choice School District

Residents of other communities may attend the Morris Plains School District free of charge in the 2014-15 school year.

Come next school year, parents interested in a new school choice option for their children may find what they are looking for in Morris Plains.

In 2013, the State of New Jersey selected the Morris Plains School District as a New Jersey Department of Education Choice District. For the 2014-15 school year, the Morris Plains School District will continue to welcome Choice students.

This means that residents of other communities may attend the Morris Plains School District free of charge in the 2014-15 school year.

In 2010, the Interdistrict Public School Choice Program Act was signed into law, establishing a permanent and expanded Interdistrict Public School Choice Program.

“Choice is good for students because it expands opportunities and it benefits taxpayers because districts are tapping a new revenue service,” New Jersey Commissioner of Education Christopher Cerf said.

As a participating Choice district, Morris Plains will receive additional state aid. Morris Plains Superintendent Mark Maire estimates that the Public School Choice Program can generate over $450,000 of revenue per year, thus benefitting Morris Plains taxpayers directly.

Those interested in learning more can attend one of two Public School Choice Program information sessions for being held on “Choice Night,” Oct. 7:

  • Mountain Way School  (K-2)  6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.
  • Borough School (3-8) 8:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

The Morris Plains School District features an award-winning staff, small class sizes; and SMART Board, Redcat Voice Amplification Sound Systems, and Document Cameras in every classroom. The Morris Plains School District offers a challenging curriculum that engages the students and prepares them for success.

According to Maire, students in the Morris Plains School district have earned NJASK scores that are consistently among the highest in Morris County. The Morris Plains School District inspires to create an environment that is academically excellent, developmentally responsive, and socially equitable to support students in reaching their fullest potential both now and in the 21st century.

Maire said it was the efforts of the Morris Plains staff and Board of Education working together that made Morris Plains a top tier New Jersey School District and therefore a desirable destination.

"Seats in Morris Plains will be at a premium due to the reputation for excellence that the district enjoys," Maire said.

Maire said that Public School Choice presents an opportunity for parents to take charge of their child’s education.

"We welcome the opportunity to share all the innovative programs taking place within our schools," Maire said.
