State Aid Increases in Plains

Borough school district to receive more money

The Morris Plains school district will receive more than $95,000 in additional state aid this year, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Ernest Palestis confirmed.

The increase of $97,412 brings the total aid for the 2012-2013 school year to $563,128. Aid for the 2011-2012 school year was $465,716.

The three areas of increase aid were transportation, special education and security, Palestis said.

The percent increase in aid was 20.9.

Palestis said he hopes to see the $13,264 in additional security aid will be used toward the installation of security cameras on the Borough School grounds to monitor people who enter or leave the campus 24 hours a day in case of vandalism. Palestis said there was one incident of vandalism this year.

The transportation budget pays for both busing students to Morristown High School and transporting special education students with out-of-district placement.

Areas of aid that might be cut include Title I which is aid to children who live in poverty. That figure will drop $8,656. Less certain is the amount of title II aid for professional development. Palestis said that could also drop.

He said the budget is in process and will soon be sent to the county. A hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, March 28.

Palestis said the Morris Plains community is supportive of the borough schools and that is reflected in the quality of education. He said a budget was defeated a number of years ago, but normally the community adopts budgets.
