Towns and Dungee Advance for MHS in Region Wrestling Tournament
Morristown High School is sending two wrestlers to the semifinals of the Region 3 wrestling tournament.
After the first night of the Region 3 wrestling tournament at Union High School, two Morristown High School wrestlers, Desmond Towns (145 pounds) and Darren Dungee (215 pounds), are one step closer to earning a spot in the state tournament in Atlantic City.
Towns, the No. 3 seed at 145 pounds, was impressive in his quarterfinal round match against Delbarton’s Josef Johnson, working to a 6-1 decision win.
“I’ve wrestled [Johnson] before and I know him from a long time ago,” Towns explained. “He’s a really, really good kid and I know he’s underestimated because he’s a freshman, but he made it this far, so I know he’s really good... I've beaten him before, so I just told myself if I did it before, I can do it again.”
Towns will face second seeded Matt DiGiovanni of Cranford in Saturday’s semifinal round.
Dungee, who has a 30-2 record and the number one seed at 215 pounds, won a 3-2 decision over Colonia’s Andrew Yamakaitis and will face Frank Schaafsma in the semifinals at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 26.
