Over a Century of Helping Women In Need

Mt. Kemble Home in Morristown celebrates its 130th year of providing shelter for women over 65 struggling with housing affordability.

Another institution in Morristown celebrated a milestone on Monday as Homeless Solutions, Inc. of Morristown hosted members of its Leadership Giving Circle at the Mt. Kemble Home on Mt. Kemble Avenue.

The celebration was for the Mt. Kemble Home's 130 years of helping women in need.  The Home became part of Homeless Solutions on May 1. Homeless Solutions runs programs that aid  single women and their families, single men and those with mental disabilities. They also run a furniture resale store in Morris Plains.

According to Homeless Solutions' Susan Robinson, the Mt. Kemble Home in Morristown was founded in 1883 to provide affordable housing for elderly single women of very limited means, and it has been placed on national and state historic registers, in part due to its unique, purpose-built social mission.

"Unfortunately, due to mounting financial pressures and other organizational challenges, it was in danger of having to close," Robinson said. "The HSI Board and staff knew that if this happened, the 19 residents there would struggle to find safe, decent housing so we worked with the Board of The Mt. Kemble Home and decided that the best outcome would be for HSI to take over The Mount Kemble Home."

Guests at Monday's celebration had the opportunity to tour the historic building, hear about its history, and speak with some of the current residents.
