<p>Morris Plains is a suburban borough of 2.6 square miles that calls itself "the Community of Caring." The town began to form after a sawmill was established there in 1685. In the 200o Census, the population was calculated at 5,236. Morris Plains has a traditional downtown lined with small businesses and a Midtown Direct train to New York City. The borough is governed by a mayor and a six-member town council. All are elected directly by voters; the mayor for four years and the council members, in staggered terms, for three years.</p>
