The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States has more than 2 million members nationwide. The organization was established in 1899 by veterans who found themselves in medical and/or financial difficulty after their military service concluded. The organization has secured many rights and benefits for former members of the armed forces.

The VFW is divided into local posts, one of which is the Watnong Post #3401 in Morris Plains. Requirements for membership, as stated on the organization's official website, are: US citizenship, honorable service with the US Armed Forces, overseas service in a foreign conflict, verified by an awarding for an approved campaign medal, hostile fire/imminent danger pay or 30 consecutive or 60 non-consecutive days service in Korea.

Although the VFW is a private club, the Watnong Post is heavily involved in the local community. It runs annual clam bakes and pig roasts, sponsors a scholarship and hosts the meetings of a variety of local civic, charitable and social organizations. Its banquet hall, picnic gazebo and grounds are available for rent.
