24 Hours, 9 Thefts. Cops Say Lock Those Cars

Crimes of opportunity seen in multiple communities.

Lock your cars already, people. That's the message from Morris Township Police, who say there have been nine reports of thefts from unlocked parked cars in the last 24 hours in Morris Township. "They're happening all over, Ketch Road, Canfield Road–which is on the other side of the Township–and then Western Avenue in the middle," Captain Rich Ferrone of the Morris Township Police Department said. Ferrone said the items stolen were "the usual: GPS units, iPods, wallets, cash."  Similar incidents have occurred repeatedly over the last few months in Morris Township and the surrounding communities. In mid-May, Patch reported on six thefts involving unlocked vehicles that occurred over a two-day period in the township. Among the items reported …

Cops: Tip Helped Us Find Drunk Driver

The following arrest information was supplied by the Morris Township police department. It does not indicate a conviction.

A passing motorist tipped Morris Township officers off to an alleged drunk driver, police said. Ptl. Mark Osterhoudt had a vehicle pulled over on East Hanover Avenue on June 17, when the passing motorist stopped to tell him about another vehicle being driven erratically, according to a statement from Capt. Rich Ferrone. Police then found and stopped the Ford 250 pickup truck, in which driver Alexander Araya, 39, of Morris Township had open bottles of alcoholic beverages, Ferrone said. Araya showed signs of intoxication, and was arrested on charges of driving while intoxicated, possession of open containers of alcohol in a motor vehicle, reckless driving and driving with a suspended license, Ferrone said.  Araya was released pending a …

Extra! Extra! Man in Extra Trouble!

Police say man stole a newspaper delivery truck.

We're just glad Patch isn't delivered in trucks. It means we get to avoid this sort of stuff. A Clementon Borough man was charged recently with stealing a newspaper delivery truck from a Wawa store in Gloucester Township. When officers watched him pull away from his own home in the truck, police said, they pulled him over. Police said the man then attempted to run over a railroad embankment, nearly striking police officers and crashing into an unmarked Gloucester Township Police vehicle occupied by two detectives. The truck nearly rolled over onto its side, according to police. One thing was clear: It was bad news all around. Each Monday, Patch takes a peek at some of the more surprising, shocking, stunning and occasionally silly police-…

Cops: No Gun in Pocket, But Ice Cream in Pants

Police say man had a few run-ins with the law, woman had cool approach to shoplifting.

If a Woodbridge man did everything police say he did, he was just asking to get in trouble. Really, really asking for it. According to East Windsor police, the man first caught their attention when he called 911 to say a large building was going to be destroyed—a bogus claim. He was quickly identified and arrested, police said. But after he was released, the alleged incidents got a little more outlandish. The next was at a bank. According to Marc LeMieux, director of major crimes at the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office: “He said, ‘Nobody move,’ so everyone looks at him, everyone stops. Somebody starts to move and he says, ‘I said, nobody move.’ Then he walks up to the counter and he basically just tells the woman at counter, 'Here's a $…
