Gas Line Broken on Bailey Hollow, Police Said

Broken line likely not to cause traffic problems as road was already closed off, according to police.

Morris Township Police said a gas line break during continued roadwork on Bailey Hollow Road Thursday afternoon was going to likely take a while to be fixed. A strong scent of natural gas could be detected about a mile down Mt. Kemble Avenue, although the scent had dissapated at the place of the accident, which occurred shortly before 5 p.m. Police were on the scene and the situation had been contained, Officer Victor Galardo said. PSE&G crews quickly arrived to fix the break, police said. It was not known, however, how long the repair work would take. But, it likely would not affect traffic as Bailey Hollow Road is not a main artery and traffic already was limited because of the ongoing repairs, police said.

Construction Begins on Bailey Hollow Road

Drivers will be directed to follow a detour on Western Avenue from Ann Street to Mount Kimble Avenue.

Road work on Bailey Hollow Road began Tuesday, where the road will be closed from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Motorists will be directed to a 3.5-mile detour on Western Avenue from Ann Street to Mount Kimble Avenue. Officials expect the construction to be done by Labor Day with the road opened by the time the school year starts. The road was orginally set to be worked on last fall, but was delayed until now because of the extreme weather conditions from Hurricane Irene and the October snowstorm. Some of the reconstruction will include curving, draining and working on the roadway bed. The construction project costs about $800,000, and $230,000 of it is covered from a grant from the New Jersey Department of Transportation.
