Bear Struck, Killed on I-80 in Parsippany

Bruin was hit by car around milepost 44 early Sunday morning, police said.

A black bear cub that made its way onto westbound Interstate 80 in Morris County was struck and killed after being hit by a Mercedes early Sunday morning, state police said. The accident occurred around 2 a.m. near milepost 44 in Parsippany, according to police Sgt. Adam Grossman. The driver of the car was not injured, he said. Grossman said troopers who responded to the scene put the bear down because of the extent of its injuries. Additional information about the crash was not immediately available. The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection plans to dispose of the bear. While there were 111 bears struck by vehicles in New Jersey in 2012 and 115 in 2011, DEP spokesman Larry Ragonese said if there have been any other accidents …

'It Wasn't Just a Normal Cat,' Woman Says of Savannah

An escaped pet Savannah, bears and even an animal reported to look like a mountain lion have been spotted recently in Morris County.

Sarah Flatt saw roadrunners, scorpions and the biggest spider she's ever seen while she was living in Arizona for several months. But when she moved back to Morris County, where she grew up, there was another surprising animal encounter in store. Not sure what it was, Flatt stayed in her car and observed it for about 10 minutes. "I knew it wasn't just a normal cat," she said. "I wouldn't have gotten out to pet it. It didn't look friendly. ... It definitely scared me." She correctly guessed it was some kind of exotic house pet, took photos with …

Bears, 'Mountain Lion' Spotted in Area

Police have received numerous calls about a mother bear and her cubs since Saturday; a Dorothy Drive resident said Wednesday she believed there was a mountain lion on her street.

They may look cute and cuddly, but a wild animal spotting is not an excuse to pull out your camera phone. Morris Township Police say a mother bear and her cubs have been spotted by numerous town and township residents since last weekend, in the area of Martin Luther King Avenue over the weekend and most recently in the Lake Road section of Patriots Path. And, township police were on the lookout Wednesday afternoon when a Dorothy Drive resident called in a report of what she believed to be a mountain lion. "We checked the area, but we didn't see any, and no signs," Morris Township Police Capt. Rich Ferrone said. A number of neighbors also said they had not seen or heard anything. "Sightings of mountain lions have been on the rise throughout…
