Black Friday Lines Diminish After Daybreak

Willowbrook frenzy fades early Friday morning.

Willowbrook Mall at 6 a.m. was almost quiet. Many of the overnight bargain hunters had gone home or to the next site. Black Friday shoppers had waited for hours late Thanksgiving night for the mall's opening at midnight.

Black Friday Crowds Steady at Short Hills, Livingston

Essex County malls busy, but not overcrowded most of the day.

Essex County's two malls—Short Hills and Livingston—had a steady stream of shoppers throughout Black Friday. However, staggered store openings helped to keep the lines to a minimum Friday morning in Short Hills. By the early afternoon, Livingston was busy, but not overcrowded.

Black Friday Rush Hits the Rockaway Mall

Hundreds wait in lines after turkey meal to be the first to get holiday deals.

Hundreds rushed to the Rockaway Mall Thursday night to be the first to check out this year's Black Friday deals and to get a head start on holiday shopping. Some headed over right after their turkey meal, while others even skipped their dinner to make sure they could be the first in line. The line at Best Buy started a full day before its midnight opening on Friday. Maplewood resident Amanda Meehan was the first to get to the store at midnight on Thursday. She slept in her car, camped out all day, and skipped her Thanksgiving dinner to get the Toshiba 40-inch TV special for $179.99. Most customers who waited in the Best Buy line were also hoping to get the Toshiba deal that saved $240 on the TV. By 11:30 p.m., the line wrapped around the …

There is nothing being sold that I would consider worth more than spending time with family. No big deal can take the place of loved ones. In a few years the things people bought on sale will be in the trash. When tough times come it is your family that will be there for you. I wish people would realize that and set their priorities better than they do now. People should always come before things.   more ›

Where to Find the Best Black Friday Deals in the Morristown Area

Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday rule the shopping roost after Thanksgiving.

If you have a black belt in Black Friday shopping, listen up: area big-box retailers are gearing up to dazzle bargain hunters even earlier this year—starting on Thanksgiving Day! Last week, Walmart announced that it would open its doors at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 22, and offer holiday doorbusters while supplies last. These include deals on TVs, iPads, an electric scooter for $79 and a steam mop for $39. Not to be outdone, Target and Best Buy are also planning all-out holiday shopping assaults. Target's deals begin at 9 p.m. According to an ad leaked online, the best deals will be for TVs, a Nook, a Nikon camera and an XBOX 360 Kinect bundle. At Best Buy, doors open at midnight. Doorbusters include deals on TVs, phones and Samsung laptop …

Short Hills Mall Welcomes Shoppers on Black Friday

Unlike other area shopping centers, shoppers were sparse at the mall this morning; but filled up in the afternoon.

There were no signs of Black Friday's deal-busting madness at The Mall at Short Hills Friday morning. Shoppers at the upscale mall in northern New Jersey walked casually from store to store and carried few bags during the hours that were crowded and hectic at other malls and big box stores. The only difference from a regular shopping day? It was 8 a.m., two hours before the mall usually opens.  At some stores, Black Friday offered shoppers unprecedented deals if they made their purchases before 9 a.m. or, in some cases, noon. At the Macy's in Short Hills, employee Kathy Graul, of Union, said, "It's definitely not Target and Kohl's, but I think for the people who shop in the Short Hills Mall, the sales are good." She said some customers …

Hundreds 'Target' Midnight Shopping Deals

The line outside Route 10 store began to form six hours before the doors opened Thursday.

Several hundred packed Target as the Black Friday rush began at the Route 10 store in East Hanover Thursday at midnight. The line began at about 6 p.m., and stretched through the parking lot by the time the doors finally opened. Once inside, shoppers crammed the aisles in search of the best bargains. Flat-screen TVs were among the hottest items on customers' shopping lists. Did you head out on Thanksgiving night to get a head start on the shopping? Tell us about your experience in the comments.
