One drink could be the standard for drunken driving – at least for some people if the National Transportation Safety Board has its way. On Tuesday, the NTSB recommended states lower the blood-alcohol threshold for driving under the influence from 0.08 percent to 0.05 percent. What do you think? Is this a reasonable proposal? According to a 2011 Mothers Against Drunk Driving report, the latest available data shows New Jersey ranked 31st out of 51 states (including the District of Columbia) in drunken driving injuries and deaths. That year, there were 193 DUI fatalities, MADD said. About 10,000 deaths nationwide a year are related to drunken driving. The NTSB says the lower limit would save 500 to 800 lives a year. 'Drunk Driving Enforcement' program participation set for 9 p.m. to 3 a.m.
As if you already didn't have plenty of reasons not to drink and drive, the Morristown Police Department would like to offer one more. From 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 14, Morristown officers will be conducting sobriety checkpoints throughout town as part of the national "Drunk Driving Enforcement" program to stop drunk driving. Through the use of a grant provided by the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety, officers will be assigned to roving patrols and sobriety checkpoints in order to identify and arrest motorists who are driving while intoxicated, according to a press release. A Dover woman was allegedly under the influence of alcohol when she drove the wrong way on Interstate 287, crashed her vehicle in Parsippany and fled the scene before being apprehended early Sunday morning, State Police said. Natasha Salazar, 19, was charged with driving under the influence, reckless driving, failure to report an accident, possession of a controlled dangerous substance in a motor vehicle, obstructing the passage of other motor vehicles, willful abandonment and other lesser motor vehicle offenses, according to State Trooper Christopher Kay, of the Netcong barracks. A Morris Township teen was arrested on a charge of driving while intoxicated June 4. Morris Township Capt. Rich Ferrone said Sarah Schnur, 19, was arrested early in the morning hours that day. Ptl. Dave Kosakowski had found Schnur shortly before 3 a.m. in the driver’s seat of a vehicle that was stopped on Turtle Road with its lights out, police said. After investigating, police said, Kosakowski determined that Schnur had driven the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. Schnur was charged with driving while intoxicated, as well as with driving while intoxicated by a person under the legal age to purchase alcohol. Woman allegedly refused breath test, didn't have insurance.
A Chatham man and A Morristown woman were each arrested on charges of driving while intoxicated after separate recent motor vehicle stops, Morris Township police said. Timothy McDougland, 44, of Chatham, was arrested on a charge of driving while intoxicated just before midnight on May 19. According to Capt. Rich Ferrone, McDougland had been stopped by officers Steven Crump and Heather Jones for failing to maintain his lane on Woodland Avenue. Police said he was also charged with reckless driving. Just after midnight on the morning of May 22, Natashia Johnson, 26, of Morristown was also arrested on a charge of driving while intoxicated, Morris Township police said.
