Former Morristown Coach Takes Home More Than Olympic Medals

Mendham resident and former MHS fencing coach Bob Largman returns with medals, memories and perhaps most importantly–Cadbury chocolate.

Despite that, nothing about them has become commonplace. “Each of the games in which I have participated have had a unique identity," he said. "Sydney will always be special because it was my first Olympics. Beijing was special because of the enormity, grandeur, and exotic fashion in which it was presented.” The London games, according to Largman, have been an incredible experience of their own. “London is special because of the incredible volunteers that have given so much to making these games a wonderful experience,” he said. “The …

Video: The Art of Fencing, in Slo-Mo

Morristown foil fencers show their skills.

Fencing is one of those sports that's hard for spectators to understand, because it moves so quickly. The tip of a fencer's blade is said to be the second-fastest moving object in sport; the first being a marksman's bullet. Videographer Steve Moss slowed down the speed in this video so you can see three foil fencers from the Morristown High School Girls' Fencing team scoring points on their opponents from Randolph High School. The video was shot at the annual Santelli Fencing Tournament on Jan. 16 at Morris Knolls High School.

On Guard: Morristown Fencers, Boosters, Celebrate New Season of 'Physical Chess'

Dinner, demonstration for parents help kick-off the season.

Friends of Morristown Fencing, or FOMF, the booster club for Morristown High School fencing, held its annual pre-season pasta dinner on Dec. 13. The event was attended by members of the 80-fencer squad, their parents, head coach Paulo DaSilva, and coaches John Gringeri and Jim Memory. The evening included a demonstration of the sport often called "physical chess," and featured varsity athletes wielding each of the three weapons used in fencing: foil, sabre, and epee.
