Police reported gas leak, heavy traffic Monday afternoon.
A portion of Early Street between Speedwell Avenue and Atno Avenue was reopened after PSE&G repaired a reported gas leak. Morristown Police issued a note via the Nixle.com alert service of the reopening shortly before 4 p.m. The closure alert came shortly before 3 p.m., noting it could be several hours before the road was reopened. Work began recently on Early Street in that area as part of Phase I of the Speedwell Redevelopment Plan. Several houses along Early Street have been blocked off, with demolition expected within the next couple weeks. No indication was given whether or not the reported gas leak occurred at the demolition site.

Cracked pipe line caused gas smell, temporary evacuation Sunday morning.
Seven families were evacuated as a precautionary measure Sunday morning due to a major gas leak, PSE&G said. A smell of gas on Lake Road was reported at about 3:45 a.m. PSE&G was called to the scene and discovered a cracked main pipe line, according to PSE&G spokeswoman Bonnie Sheppard. A PSE&G crew reduced the pressure to the line and clamped it so that a repair could be made, Sheppard said. The families were allowed to return to their homes approximately seven hours later. Repairs are still ongoing, according to Sheppard.

Several buildings at Picatinny Arsenal were evacuated Thursday afternoon after a construction crew ruptured a gas line, a Picatinny public affairs specialist said Friday. According to Tim Rider, the line was struck Thursday at about 12:30 p.m., and several buildings in the central area of the installation were evacuated." The Picatinny Fire Department, Picatinny Police Department, Picatinny Arsenal Federal Guard and Picatinny's EMS 1 unit responded, Rider said. Jefferson, Mount Arlington, Lake Hopatcong and Warton fire departments also responded, Rider said. The Rockaway ambulance and fire departments also responded, as did NJ Natural Gas, Rider said.
