To the Editor: The Morris Township Committee recently passed an ordinance that would allow Honeywell Corp. to use part of its property for townhouse development. There was an exhaustive and thoughtful public review process for this proposal at the Planning Board level, which voted unanimously to recommend mixed use on this property. We want to share with you our thoughts about the Honeywell plan and our reasons for supporting it as members of the Morris Township Committee. Honeywell is the largest taxpayer in Morris Township and an employer of over 1,000 people. Its economic impact on the Township and region, however, is extensive, and the number of people whose livelihoods depend upon Honeywell includes hundreds, if not thousands more. …

Daniel Caffrey responds to recent 'Letter to the Editor' submitted by fellow Morris Township committeeman, Jeff Grayzel.

To the Editor: I recently read Morris Township Committeeman Jeff Grayzel’s Letter to the Editor regarding the “Honeywell Vote.” It is unfortunate that Mr. Grayzel uses terms like “rigged” and alleges that “politics won” in his description to the community on such an important issue. And these terms say more about the individual who writes them than about the community in which he lives. The Morris Township Committee has been following the Honeywell redevelopment proposal for more than two years. It is unquestionably the biggest issue the Township had to confront in decades. We watched the process during the planning board debates; we toured the Honeywell property to learn about the changes that are being planned; and we always hear from …

Morris Township Committeeman Jeff Grayzel was the only 'no' vote on Oct. 1 rezoning of Honeywell's 147-acre corporate campus.

To the Editor: Last week, the Honeywell Redevelopment hearings came to an end with a middle-of-the-night vote at 1:30 a.m. by the Township Committee. The process appeared rigged because the Mayor refused to let anyone go home even though we had another special meeting on the topic tentatively scheduled for two days later. The rushed process was yet another indication of the politically-motivated proceedings, given the upcoming local election and pending ethics hearings on a fellow Committeeman (Bruce Sisler). Since most residents missed what happened in the wee hours of that morning, I am writing this open letter to our residents to share my perspective on what transpired as well as to inform residents of my efforts to improve the …

Reader disagrees with statement made by Morris Township police officer regarding black bear attitudes toward humans.

To the Editor: Capt. Richard Ferrone spoke incorrectly about black bears. He was quoted as saying, "make sure you stay away from the cubs. They may be cute, cuddly cubs, but mother bear won't take kindly." Black bears do not get upset if someone is between the mother and her cubs. Lynn Rogers, PhD, has lived with bears and studied them for 40+ years. He has written that mother Black Bears do not defend their cubs against people, she sends the cubs up a tree and waits until humans leave and then she calls them down. Even the New Jersey Fish & Wildlife site says "sows will vocalize to cubs when sensing danger and both adults and cubs will run away and climb trees to escape disturbances." There are no reports of a treed bear coming down and …

To the Editor: Embarrassed Republican? The referenced author's silence this past weekend was particularly noteworthy following the "embarrassing" performance of BHO in the debate last week. Mitt proved to be his intellectual superior while BHO was lost without his Teleprompter. It was clear to me, every poll and most of the demoralized liberal media that Obama is outmatched. Bad for him and those who prefer to only be takers in our society. Good news for those who aspire to participate in a growing economy. —Edward Doyle Morristown

To the Editor: From my experience as a retired New York City/State peace officer of 32 years I started to write many motivational quotations as a public service in the hope of reaching and inspiring young people to help overcome a lack of self confidence, low self-esteem and inferiority issues. There are numerous examples of great thought and inspirational quotes/ideas turning a troubled life around, preferably at the pre-teen period before their pent-up self-rage, anger and emotions get out of control. Young people who bully are also harming themselves as much as their victims and may be former victims who may lack self-esteem and confidence themselves. They may verbally and physically attack anyone, or anyone that they know or strangers…

To the Editor: In response to "Veteran Questions Frelinghuysen's Voting Record" dated Sept. 28, 2012 This issue again? I am always amused that partisan opponents of our Congressman, Rodney Frelinghuysen, think they can curry favor with the voters by attacking a fellow veteran with a distinguished record of service. Sure, anyone can take a few votes out of context in a career filled with thousands of votes. But the truth of the matter is that I know of no other veteran who thinks Mr. Frelinghuysen doesn’t care about veterans or does them any ill. In fact, talk to any of the veterans leaders in this area and they will tell you they are proud to stand alongside Frelinghuysen. Actually, Mr. Foley’s attacks are not amusing. They are a sad …

To the Editor: I attended a town hall meeting on Saturday, June 23, 2012, at the Roseland Municipal Building that was conducted by Rodney Frelinghuysen, the Congressman representing NJ’s 11th district. As a veteran who served this country, I have a special interest in understanding how and why our representatives vote on issues of war, the military, and veterans’ affairs. I asked Congressman Frelinghuysen three questions about his voting record: Congressman Frelinghuysen never answered the first question. With respect to the second two, he replied as follows: “Veterans should never be second class citizens. I’ve always voted to support health care and job training for veterans.” When asked the third question, the Congressman actually …

Editors note: The ethics committee met for the first time on Tuesday night since its new members were appointed. The members are Attorney Peter Manahan, Attorney John Carlin, Attorney Patrick Minter, professor Dr. Michael Shumer, Raymond Snyder, who is retired, and Attorney Karen Zimmerman. Dear Mayor Mancuso: Just yesterday I learned of your appointments to the Ethics Committee that has been recently convened and I must admit that I am a bit dismayed. I fully recognize that it is your prerogative to name individuals to such committees, but as chairperson of the Morris Township Democratic Committee, I believe it would have been appropriate for you to consult me regarding the possible appointments. It would have been a courtesy in the …

Tensions between bicyclists and motorists are in the spotlight this summer and we believe it’s time we all took more responsibility for cooling the confrontation and sharing the road. We represent bicycle clubs and organizations with over 2,000 members in NW and Central NJ. Each of us is also a motorist. We understand sharing the road from behind the wheel of a car as well as on a bicycle. We are as upset as anyone when a bicyclist does not ride safely or a group of cyclists block the road and surround a car as reportedly happened in Tewksbury this summer. Our organizations train riders on safe road sharing, criticize riders who do not, and are ready to work with police and town officials to make the roads safe for all. We also know, …

That's too funny! Tragic though, that no one is defending Sisler or explaining why the sanctity of the public trust doesn't demand his permanent ouster. Not Rosenbush, not any family member of Sisler, not Mancuso, not Caffrey, not Bucco Sr., not Honeywell, not Bucco Jr. No one. Not even Sisler himself.   more ›
