Several New Jersey museums will open their doors to Bank of America and Merill Lynch cardholders this weekend as part of the bank's "Museums On Us" initiative. The intention of the event is "to provide a cultural benefit to Bank of America cardholders and increase access to the arts across the United States," according to a press release. "The program brings new audiences and increased attention to participating organizations, which range from some of the nation’s most celebrated museums to regional gems and include art, science and history museums, as well as other cultural institutions," the press release said. Susan Zellman, founding executive director of the Housing Partnership for Morris County, has announced she will be retiring in March. Zellman, who has also been a Sussex County freeholder for the past 12 years, including serving as freeholder director for the past two, has led the organization for the past 20 years in continuing its mission to provide affordable housing opportunities to residents throughout the county. The Housing Partnership helps low-income families obtain home ownership and provides education programs and advice, as well as down payment assistance, foreclosure intervention and mortgage assistance, for people in need. On Wednesday, Garden State Smashburgers will donate a portion of sales from its New Jersey burgers to help Jerseyans impacted by Sandy.
Smashburger is giving customers a tasty way to help with Superstorm Sandy relief. The burger chain's New Jersey locations, including the Parsippany branch on Route 46 and the Morris Plains site on Route 10, will donate $2 for every New Jersey burger sold this Wednesday to the Restore the Shore Projects Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund. (The New Jersey burger features a beef patty topped with bacon, blue cheese, onions, lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise on an onion bun.) In the true spirit of holiday giving, Arthur’s Tavern in Morris Plains is donating $2 for every lunch or dinner entrée served on Wednesday, Dec. 12 to the Community Soup Kitchen and Outreach Center in Morristown. “No one should go hungry this holiday season," said owner Alyce McGreevy. "We recognize that many people here in Morris County are still struggling through tough economic times. The devastation from Hurricane Sandy is still affecting many of our neighbors. Church of the Redeemer, in Morristown, will honor the lives of men and women killed due to anti-transgender hatred or prejudice on Sunday, Nov. 18 at its 10:30 a.m. service. One candle will be lit to represent each life taken over the last year, and a brief history of each individual will be read as their candle is extinguished. The Transgender Day of Remembrance is a day set aside each year to memorialize those who have been killed as a result of the hatred or fear of transgender and gender non-conforming people. Superstorm Sandy devastated homes, trees, wires and caused more than a million power outages in New Jersey. She even destroyed Thanksgiving dinner. The storm knocked out power that ruined turkeys, hams and other products that were going to be distributed to the Interfaith Food Pantry in Morris Plains. That delivery will now not happen. With Thanksgiving only a week away, the Interfaith Food Pantry has turned to organizations such as Hurricane Sandy Helping Hands for assistance. Hurricane Sandy Helping Hands will accept turkeys, hams and large chickens on Wednesday and Thursday as well as gift cards at the Hanover Library parking lot to be placed in a refrigerated truck.
